Criminal History Records
To obtain a copy of your Utah Criminal History Record (Right of Access), you may request your record in person at our office, or through the mail by filling out an Application for Criminal History Record. Utah is a closed record state therefore only the person whose record it is can request their record. The Utah Criminal History database consists of arrest records and dispositions from arresting agencies and the courts. An individual's record will only contain arrest records that are verified by fingerprints before being included in their criminal history report.
Processing Fee Notice: The fee for a Right of Access is $20.00. All processing fees are non-refundable once the background check is initiated.
Walk-In Services (Fastest Option)
When you come to our office to obtain your record, it will be processed while you wait, and you will leave with your record.
- No Appointments Needed: We process Criminal History Reports without appointments, during our office hours. Our hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Except for recognized holidays.
- Identification Rules: You must present a valid government-issued photo ID. (i.e. driver's license, passport, state ID.) Note: Utah Driving Privilege Cards are not valid forms of ID.
Applications by Mail
We accept mailed in applications. You can download the application from our website at bci.utah.gov. You must include the following items:
- Valid Photo ID: A photocopy of your current driver's license, state ID or passport.
- Remittance: Include a check or money order or complete the Credit Card section on the application. Make sure to sign the authorization line.
- Fingerprints: You can have your prints taken in the box on the application or submit a 10 print finger-print card.

Third-Party Release
You may request to have your Criminal History Report sent to a third party by filling out a Third-Party Release Form. Indicate the name of the person who the report should be sent to, their address and be sure to sign the form.

Need a National Criminal History Record?
Utah’s Right of Access report includes Utah-based records only. It does not include background or criminal information from other states.
If you require a nationwide criminal history record, you must request an Identity History Summary Check directly from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Looking for Your Driving Record?
Please note that we do not maintain driving records. The Utah Driver License Division (DLD) handles all driver license history requests.
