This incident occurred on August 21st, 1939, around 9:10 pm. A hitchhiker on US Hwy 91 near the Farmington Junction was killed by a heavy truck. The hitchhiker was standing on the edge of the road, trying to get a ride southward, when a truck turned onto the highway from the mountain road. The driver attempted to swerve to avoid him, but there was traffic coming in the opposite lane. The hitchhiker was thrown into the guardrail and was killed instantly with a broken neck. The body was brought to Union Mortuary in Bountiful, where he was examined. The man was estimated to be 25 to 30 years old, about 5′ 9″ tall, weighed between 170 and 180 lbs., had red close-cropped hair, light blue eyes, And a tattoo on his left forearm. He was found wearing a gray checkered cap, two Pairs of trousers: the outer pair was in army style being held up with a piece of rope, the inner pair was dark blue with a light blue stripe, and a grayish blue coat. His pockets contained “number trinkets” but no identification. He had 15 broken buttons, a pair of buck-skin gloves, an extra pair of socks, and a clipping from a Portland, Oregon, newspaper dated Aug 12th.
