Unidentified Cold Case Tip Hotline: 833-DPS-SAFE (833-377-7233)

On Aug 22, 1965, the Box Elder County Sheriff was notified by railroad officials of an unidentified body found near Groome Switch Siding, a Southern Pacific Railroad Company track, west of Promontory Point. It was resting in about a foot of water in marshy area, west of the Great Salt Lake. The body was that of an African American male, about 30 years old, with a beard. It appeared that there was no foul play and he likely fell from a train. He had multiple head injuries, including a skull fracture. Investigators learned that the man boarded the train in California and had purchased a loaf of bread in Elko, NV. Several attempts were made to take fingerprints from the man though it was difficult due to the condition of his skin after being submerged in the water for some time. The man was never identified.
