Baby John DOE-Uintah County
On March 1, 1952 the body of a newborn baby boy was found in the Vernal City Dump near a gravel pile on the West end. The body was wrapped in layers of heavy brown paper that was partially burned away, however, no burning had taken place in the dump recently. The body itself was slightly burned on the back and right leg. There were no other marks on the body. Dr. Ray Spendlove stated that the baby appeared to have been born alive and normal, had weighed between 7-8 pounds, and was about 18 inches long. The Death Certificate describes the baby as white, but a newspaper article noted the baby was of a dark complexion. How long the baby had been in the dump could not be determined since the body was frozen solid, but it could have been up to several weeks.
