On January 5, 1982 Tooele County Detectives were informed of 1976 Black Ford Pickup Truck with a Camper that was impounded by a UHP Trooper on interstate 80 mile marker 46. During the vehicle inventory, bloodstains were found on the vehicle door and windows.

Inside the Camper, the body of a deceased male was found. The male was later identified as Gary Stein, he was laying on his back towards the front portion of the camper. Stein appeared to have been dead for some time. Stein was stabbed on the right side of the neck and left rib cage, Stein’s ID and personal papers were missing.
